I interviewed a few students here at FHS about the ICE walk-out/protest that happened January 12th at the school itself and here’s what I found out. All the students thought that it went well and were all glad that it happened. One student was thankful to Nathan Molitor for letting this take place at our school, it stayed peaceful, and there was a large amount of people who showed up to participate.
Some of the impact of this from the students was quite split, some said it made a good impact and helped people understand what’s happening in our community and some students saw people driving and cheering and supporting. On the other side of this some say the people were upset that this happened and say stuff like the students shouldn’t be allowed to do this. Another student was talking about how this helped get our community out of the slum it’s been in but they don’t feel like it will impact what happened in Minneapolis or what happened world wide.
In regards to “Should The School Do Another Protest” some say yes and some say no. One student said”having protests isn’t a good thing”, but someone said that they would like to do another protest. Iv gathered that protests are not good but may be necessary to get your point across as some of the students have said the school should not do more protest but instead the community as a whole as its important for all the students in FHS to stay in class and learn.
All the students I asked agreed on this, the protest has impacted them personally, it’s made them feel as though they can speak up about problems that they may have been afraid to talk about before. Most of them said they were after because they didn’t know what was going on and had given them more information on what’s going on and more awareness. It made some of them feel good seeing all their people coming together for a cause that affects everyone even if it’s not as much.
Some of the students have said that your attendance shouldn’t be excused, if you partake and protest during school hours. This is because it’s your choice to take part in this and if all students were excused from class then you’d have some students going for the wrong reasons like to skip class.
This was important because it impacts you, your friends, and your family, we are impacted by all of these and if some people see this they may feel like they want to join the cause as well, it also helps raise awareness of what’s happening in the community.
In conclusion the protest helped spread awareness of what’s happening in the community, gave some people the strength to stand up and voice out about problems, see what’s important to you, your friends and family, and over all helped us come together as a community.
